The advent of the blog has marked a deep improvement in the way to make use the Internet potentialities, social and web design. But on many blogs are still some annoyances:
- Home Page of excessive length;
- meaningless titles.
These alone risk to render frustrating to follow an author who interests to us.
Home Page of excessive length
One of the characteristics of the blogs is to show in the home page the last posts (or articles) published. If the home page show the last 10 articles, for more with the complete text and not with the summary, it risks to become kilometric. If these posts are not so short and contains some images, the visitor is in trouble: I go on a blog and I must dowload 500KB! Ok, nowadays there is ADSL connectivity (not for all, anyway), but this is not the web focused on the contents!
The guilty are some platforms of publication. For example Blogger (the first blog for many), does not allow the publication of summaries in place of the complete post and for default it has the home page set up to show an excessive number of articles.
Some blogging tools give permalink to the single article only as anchors drowned inside of this mega-page-archives. It can therefore happen that following a link we must load an entire montly archive page only to read few lines.
The weblog of Massimo Mantellini of which I was for a long time an anonymous reader is an optimal example.
Meaningless titles
Many blog today have a large audience coming from “rss feed”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_feed and this trend will increase with the time. Reading a feed with a aggregator (software or on-line) is little like reading the mail: the title (subject) would have to make clear what is the matter the author are writing of. If it interests, open and read, otherwise step beyond. Simple, or not?
But for a strange mental mechanism there is who just does not succeed to say in direct way the argument. Why? Some authors are good enough to use humorous title without sacrifice the information, for all the others would be better write more descriptive titles. The readers can became annoyed to open every titles only for understand of what you are writing.
